Lapo Simeoni
The Last Journey
About the project
This project explores myth, ritual, and death through my family’s journey. In 2019, I made a personal trip to honor my mother, retracing the route from the morgue to our family cemetery in Maccarese, Lazio. My mother and I traveled together for many years, attending exhibitions across Italy, and this video commemorates that bond. It weaves visual fragments of past, present, and imagined futures, set to live, archaic music by Laure Boer. The video moves from Scansano (Tuscany), my hometown, to Maccarese, reflecting on memory, continuity, and the cyclical nature of life and death.

This project seeks to explore the themes of myth, ritual, and death within the context of my own family’s journey. In a rather buoyant and optimistic way, I aim to imagine the possible perspective of a passenger during my mother’s final journey—between Tuscany and Lazio, from the morgue to the family cemetery in Maccarese. In 2019, I embarked on a deeply personal trip, one that seemed like the most fitting way to honor her: the last voyage with her. My mother and I spent much of our lives traveling together, driving to various exhibitions across Italy. This video commemorates that bond, reflecting on the memories of my beloved mother, transcending the borders of time and space. The video blends visual fragments of the past, present, and fictional futures, using live, archaic music composed by Laure Boer. The landscape in the video moves from Scansano (GR), my hometown in Tuscany, to Maccarese (Rome), where my mother’s family cemetery is located—since my mother was originally from Rome. Through this work, I wish to pay tribute to her and to our shared experiences of travel and life, weaving a narrative that embraces memory, continuity, and the cyclical nature of life and death.
