Mariya Kutuzova
Liberation
About the project
The work «Liberation» is based on the ideas of Jean-Paul Sartre and Michel Foucault and explores death as a path to liberation. Sartre saw death not as a tragedy, but as an opportunity to break free from imposed roles and attain true freedom. Foucault, on the other hand, focused on power structures that shape our identity. In the project, wire sculptures of beings symbolize these limitations and boundaries. The white color represents a "clean slate" — a new phase of life and a chance to start anew. The forms of the beings, resembling both human and animal, reflect their dual nature and transitional state, symbolizing a process of metamorphosis and release from constraints.

The forms of the beings, resembling both human and animal, reflect their dual nature and transitional state, symbolizing a process of metamorphosis and release from constraints. The central idea of the project is the acceptance of death as an act of liberation, which aligns with the philosophy of existentialism and post-structuralism, emphasizing freedom, transformation, and the rethinking of the boundaries of our existence.

Death as an act of liberation, which echoes the philosophies of existentialism and poststructuralism that emphasize freedom, transformation, and making sense of the limits of our existence.
