RUBEZH: DEATH
IV International Instant Exhibition of Émigré Art RUBEZH: DEATH
Tbilisi, November 22-24
RUBEZH is planning to host another contemporary art exhibition-festival dedicated to the theme of death in the context of emigration.
CONCEPT
In the context of migration, death plays a very important role. An emigrant seems to die and be reborn in a new place — hence the expression "starting life from scratch." Psychologists claim that every emigrant experiences the same emotions when moving as when they lose a loved one. Often, the threat of death is the reason for emigration: refugees, oppositionists, deserters, prisoners. Death is a key tool for suppressing citizens in authoritarian countries, and, naturally, people from such countries try to leave more often.
ORGANIZATION
We will announce an open call, which will close a month before the exhibition. The jury will include contemporary art experts from Europe. Artists from around the world with migrant experience, as well as citizens of Georgia, are invited to participate. All mediums are accepted: painting, video, digital art, music, sculpture, installations, performances, and others. Even DJ sets are allowed if presented as an artistic statement.
Exhibition opening — Friday evening, November 22. The exhibition will run almost 24/7 until Sunday evening, November 24. Every day there will be lectures, artist talks, film screenings, and other events.
Tickets: Half of the proceeds will go to human rights and volunteer organizations, such as Amnesty International, Choose to Help, Tbilisi Volunteers, and others.
Humanitarian aid collection: There will be a spot at the exhibition to collect humanitarian aid for Ukrainian refugees in Georgia. Visitors can bring medicine, clothing, baby food, and other necessary items.
ABOUT RUBEZH PROJECT
International diaspora of émigré artists RUBEZH
We are RUBEZH.
We bring together émigré artists.
We believe that every artist deserves a home.
To adapt to a new country, migrants often find themselves in national diasporas where each member can feel safe and receive support from completely unfamiliar people. However, we are against dividing people by inherent characteristics: whether it’s nationality, skin color, or others.
We create an international diaspora for artists. A community where it doesn’t matter who you were born as, but rather who you have become.
Our Projects — Past, Present, Future
Our guiding principle is liberty.
The freedom from oppression, totalitarianism, prejudices of the mind, from the fear of death.

- The understanding of death in both a literal, physical sense and a metaphorical one
- Death as a transition from one state to another
- The fear of death: both the fear of physical decay and the fear of parting with something familiar
- Causes of death: illnesses, catastrophes, war
- Government regimes based on death and fear: cannibalistic laws, treating people as pieces of meat
- Life as the opposite of death, how people overcome death
- Death and freedom: accepting death as liberation
- Death as a routine: always present, like the sun or the wind
- Living people, dead inside: how life and death coexist, and not everything is as it seems
- Death and birth: what unites them and what is their complete opposite

Our Projects — Past, Present, Future
- International Instant Exhibitions of Émigré Art RUBEZH
- 3 pop-up exhibitions, 135 projects, 20 countries.
- We explore the theme of migration through fundamental natural processes and concepts that resonate with every person. We strive not to restrict participants to any specific medium.
- Musicians and artists, poets and DJs coexist and collaborate.
- Communes and Shelters
- We aim to build a society where freedom and human life are finally valued. We are already doing this in our homes — communes and shelters. Together, they have housed 150 people
- Local Events
- In every city where we live or pass through, we host parties, open lectures, small exhibitions, and anything else that seems interesting to us. These events are meant to connect different migrant communities with each other and help integrate them into the local context.
Our guiding principle is liberty.
The freedom from oppression, totalitarianism, prejudices of the mind, from the fear of death.
